Loretta lives in the Chicago ghetto with her mother Rosa Lynn and her two children, the enterprising Thomas and the autistic Tracy. For years, Rosa Lynn has watched her unemployed and drug-addicted daughter neglect both herself and her children. Rosa Lynn realizes that something must be done before the family is completely destroyed, so she gives Loretta an ultimatum: either she takes the children over the summer to her brother-in-law Earl’s home in Mississippi, or she contacts the child welfare authorities and gives them custody. Rosa Lynn has no choice but to agree to her mother’s demands and soon the trip goes south. Once there, Earl puts Loretta to work in his small restaurant, while he begins to tell them about the importance of family ties and traditions, and about the family’s previous generations going back to slavery before the Civil War. Slowly it begins to dawn on Rosa Lynn what she came close to losing.
