German war drama directed and written by Kurt Maetzig. Guste (Camilla Spira) is the illegitimate daughter of a maid who dreams of a better life for herself. When her husband Paul (Werner Hinz) is called up to the frontline, she is left to take care of their children.

Getting a job in a munitions factory, Guste soon realises that she is helping to prolong the war, and, as a result, Paul’s absence, by supplying the army with weapons. Guste takes a stand, quitting her job and becoming a cleaner.
