This book concentrates on avant-garde art in Eastern European countries in the 1960s and 1970s. This was often not accepted as official art, but can be considered as living art in comparison to the more ideological, political work that was presented in state museums. The works of these artists are mainly conceptual, and take the form of installations, photographs and reconstructions of happenings and site-specific pieces. They concentrate on the dematerialization of the object and art’s relation to society. Connections to cosmology, metaphysics and technology give these artworks a futuristic and utopian view.
